Bio

I moved to Salem, Oregon four years ago from Southeast, Alaska. I bring to teaching a wide range of life experiences. I grew up in Southern, California in a small racially integrated desert community. I attended college at San Diego State University and earned a degree in Psychology. Shortly after college, I headed to Alaska. Once I landed in Alaska, I found myself involved in one remote living experience after another. After 18 years of living in Alaska, family responsibilities brought us back to the Lower 48. After years of solitude I feel a great need to be a part of a community. Since my son was born in 1998 I have been immersed in the world of children. I have discovered an unknown passion-teaching. Since I spent most of my younger years exploring and not saving for my retirement, I now realize that I will have work far into my sixties. I lose track of time whenever I am with children so I have decided that teaching is the profession for me-I will be happy and feel fulfilled while making a contribution to society and earning a retirement. 1. Wow --- 18 years in Alaska. We were in Valdez for our first year of teaching --- and that's remote. It will be fun to chat on your wilderness adventure(s). Welcome to Oregon.

  3. Hi Barry,
I have never been to Valdez but I have spent time in Prince William Sound. My husband and I spent three months camping in Prince William Sound during the winter of 1988-1989. We set out in our skiff from Whittier to Eaglek Bay. We had heard that there was a fellow near Eaglek Bay oyster farming. My husband and I thought we might like to become oyster farmers so we decided to spend some time in the Sound exploring the area for another oyster farm site. We also knew the winters were tough there, so we decided to witness a winter to see if it was actually possible to operate a business in winter conditions. We had a wonderful and scary time. It was an experience of a lifetime.
We left the Sound in January of 1989-the oil spill happened that March. My husband traveled out to the Sound shortly after the spill. We made friends with a fellow who did have an oyster farm site in the Sound-Fairmont Bay Oysters -it was so sad......

During that winter, I always wanted to make a trip to Valdez but the weather never permitted that sort of trip in a skiff. Thanks for asking about our adventures-it's fun to reminisce. TR
